Mississippi was the 20th state admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817. It ranked 31st in population among the states as of the year 2000 with the population at around 2,844,658. It ranks 32nd among the states with a land area of 46,907 sq mi. (121,489 sq km). The Capital of Mississippi is Jackson and the postal abbreviation is MS. The State nickname is the "Magnolia State." Mississippi was first settled by the Spaniards aroung 1540, then by the French around 1699, and by Great Brittain in 1763 who later ceded the land over to the United States in 1783. For a little more than a hundred years, cotton was the undisputed king of Mississippi's largely agrarian economy. Other harvested crops in Mississippi are of corn, peanuts, pecans, rice, sugar cane, and sweet potatoes as well as poultry, eggs, meat animals, dairy products, feed crops, and horticultural crops. Mississippi remains the world's leading producer of pond-raised catfish.
